Why High Availability Is More Than Having a Backup
A before/after simulation of a primary-database crash under two postures. Strategy A (Backup-Only) holds a safe 5-minute RPO backup but must provision a node, download the snapshot, replay WAL, and re-point DNS — a 6-hour cold restore while an Outage Cost counter climbs past $1.8M (ITIC: 91% of outages cost >$300k/hour). Strategy B (Automated HA) streams WAL replication to a standby and promotes it in under 5 seconds with zero downtime. The spare-tire-vs-twin-engine metaphor lands the lesson: a backup protects your data history (RPO); High Availability protects your service continuity (RTO).
LIVE SIMULATION
HOW THIS RUNS
This is a live, interactive recreation embedded directly on the page — not a static diagram. Step through the scenes above to watch traffic reroute across the tiers in real time. The embedded simulation is recorded on screen, and that capture becomes the content.
